Volunteer Highlight: California Attorney Pedaling Cross-country to Raise Money for the Komen Foundation

When people ask Menlo Park, Calif. attorney Erika Rottenberg what she did for excitement this summer, she'll have a great answer: By August, she will have ridden her bicycle from Seattle, Wash. to Boston, Mass.

An enthusiastic cyclist, Ms. Rottenberg's not training for the Tour de France, or any other elite cycling race. She's raising money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Ms. Rottenberg is committed to doing what she can to support the fight against breast cancer. The disease took the life of her mother and several of her friends have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

"This is an opportunity to combine something I love - cycling - with something I care deeply about," said Ms. Rottenberg, who is general counsel of a Menlo Park high tech company. She did exhaustive research on a number of breast cancer advocacy organizations and chose to donate her cross-country bike ride proceeds to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation because the Foundation "is a global leader in the fight against breast cancer."

Ms. Rottenberg has teamed with Cycle America, a Cannon Falls, Minnesota-based trip organizer. She’s taking part in the company's annual coast-to-coast ride, from Seattle to Boston and has selected Komen to receive pledges made on her behalf.

Why is she putting in an average of 75 miles a day on her bike, with only one designated day of rest per week? Because she wants to honor her mother and the nearly 40,000 women who die of breast cancer each year by raising money for more research and education. Her goal is to raise between $50,000 and $100,000 for Komen over the course of the 4,200-mile adventure.

Susan Braun, president and CEO of the Komen Foundation congratulated and thanked Ms. Rottenberg at the outset of her journey for choosing the Komen Foundation and went on to say, "Erika is a shining example of how one person can truly make a difference. This is a challenging way to do something significant for the cause, and on behalf of everyone associated with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, we salute and thank Erika for her brave commitment and valiant support."

Ms. Rottenberg admits her goal is ambitious, but she's having a little cool fun along the way: She's sampling ice cream all across the U.S. to get the scoop on who serves the best.
